What About Us?
Red Rock Olive Oil is owned and operated by the Moffitt Family, which has six generations of California farming expertise. The olive orchard surrounds beautiful Red Rock Lake, located in Orland, California. Super High Density (shd) olives were planted, the innovative farming method where olive trees are planted in a hedgerow pattern (similar to a vineyard) that allows 670 trees per acre.
These hedgerows allow for maximum land usage and the capability for a more efficient harvesting process. The fruit is mechanically harvested as opposed to hand picked, so the olives can be processed within a few hours – enhancing quality, food safety, sanitation, freshness and shelf life.
At Red Rock Olive Oil, we don’t just talk about sustainability, we live it. In addition to the information you’ll read below, our offices are powered entirely with renewable solar energy.
What’s with the Lake?
Well, Red Rock Lake is what makes our orchard so unique. The lake provides multiple uses that include sustainable farming practices. Not only does it offer recreation, beauty, and a natural ecosystem, the lake is a self-sustaining annual irrigation source. Additional agronomic benefits include frost protection, filtration, and water quality control.
The orchard and lake coexist through management practices that put the highest value on the wildlife and ecosystem while growing the best possible olives. Native areas have been left to allow duck, geese, and pheasant nesting habitat. Owl and bat nesting boxes have also been included in the overall management plan. Geese, herons, ducks, and dozens of other native birds and animal species come and go from the property throughout the year. Even river otters have been known to visit our lake in past years.
Beyond the Olives
Imagine carving turn after turn on soft water, smooth as glass, as you’re passing through endless rows of olives. This is a daily summertime routine, as the 17-acre lake nestled among the olive orchard provides endless enjoyment and opportunities. Red Rock Lake is a recreational gem. Water skiing is a passion of our family’s and many of our friends.
The lake has provided a safe and comfortable environment for children and families to either learn to ski for the first time or ski short-line lengths as they practice for upcoming tournaments. On the water docks provide the most relaxing place to unwind while enjoying a cold beverage and dipping some warm bread into fresh Red Rock Olive Oil.
